Anyone using dosimeters has come across a few unusual readings, which could stem from unusual radiation; doses may be higher or lower than expected. Let our years of experience providing dosimeters at medical facilities, universities, national laboratories, nuclear installations, and commercial dosimetry providers work for you. Chances are we have seen your problem before. Services include assistance with internal and external (including neutron, X-ray, gamma, Beta, and extremity) radiation dosimetry.
External DosimetryDosimeters use a variety of detection mediums (TLD, film, plastics, optically-stimulated materials, etc). Materials have inherent strengths and weaknesses that affect overall performance. Many dosimeters are more sensitive to X-rays and low energy photons, resulting in excessive reported dose (especially when using fluoroscopy). If there were an optimal dosimeter for all applications, the others would no longer be in use. It doesn't make sense to use one type of dosimeter for all applications. Use of multiple dosimeter types can also lower your overall cost from vendors.
We can help you choose the appropriate dosimeter for each application. Whether your personnel receive neutron, beta, X-Ray, or gamma radiation to the whole body or any extremity, we can make sure you are utilizing an appropriate and cost-effective dosimeter. We work with you and your dosimetry provider to select dosimeters and investigate reported doses. Each investigation includes a written report for your records.
High-dose Dosimetry (fluoroscopy, radiopharmaceuticals, radioisotopes, power plants, etc.)If your staff is receiving radiation doses that approach regulatory or administrative limits, we can help. The type of dosimeter you are using could result in higher than actual doses. In some cases, multi-badging can significantly reduce the effective dose. Even the most appropriate dosimeter can be processed using inaccurate assumptions. We work with your staff and dosimetry provider to ensure you use appropriate dosimeters that are processed with valid assumptions. We can also train your staff in the proper use of dosimeters and dose-reducing techniques.
Regulatory ConcernsWhen starting a dosimetry program, or if problems occur, you may need help negotiating with regulators. We can set up programs to suit the requirements of federal and state agencies. We can also help you prepare and implement action plans to remedy raised concerns.
Internal DosimetryInternal dosimetry is required to assess dose from internally deposited radionuclides. We can assess the dose using your data with standard models or data-specific to an individual when available. We can ensure your staff is effectively monitored.
